The more successfully a person demonstrates preserved ability, the easier it may become for others to conclude that support is unnecessary.
Many systems look for visible evidence of diminished ability when deciding whether someone needs support. That creates a problem for people whose ability is real but whose access to it is variable, conditional, or unreliable.
Someone may explain a problem clearly, perform well during an appointment, complete a demanding task on one day, or demonstrate expertise in a familiar context. Those observations establish that the performance is possible under those conditions.
They do not, by themselves, establish that equivalent access is available with the frequency, stability, or reliability required in other settings.
The paradox is not that competence is being recognized. The problem is treating a snapshot of competence as proof that accessibility has already been achieved.
Research on episodic disability, masking, workplace accommodation, fluctuating impairment, and credibility shows why visible performance can complicate recognition of support need.

How should institutions assess reliability over time? Which forms of support reduce the paradox without increasing disclosure burden? These questions require further inquiry.
When evaluating access needs, ask more than “Can this person do it?” Also ask: under what conditions, how reliably, for how long, and what happens when those conditions change?
